June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to honour the rich histories, vibrant cultures, achievements, and resilience of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. It is an opportunity to recognize the deep connections Indigenous Peoples have to this land since time immemorial and to reflect on their enduring contributions to the Canada we know today.
Within this month, June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a nationally recognized day to celebrate the unique heritage and diverse cultures of Indigenous communities. This date was chosen because of the cultural significance of the summer solstice—the longest day of the year—which has long been a sacred time of celebration, renewal, and connection to the land for many Indigenous groups.
