On September 30th, we wear orange shirts to remember the Indigenous children who were taken from their families and sent to residential schools. Orange Shirt Day comes from the story of Phyllis Webstad, whose new orange shirt was taken away on her first day of school—symbolizing the loss of culture, identity, and childhood.
The same date is also recognized as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a time for us to listen, learn, and reflect on how we can all work together to ensure every child is valued and respected—because Every Child Matters.
Explore a 10-day classroom activity focused on reconciliation that also includes Cree values for each of the days.
