The Blanket Exercise is a powerful, interactive learning experience that helps participants understand the impact of colonization on Indigenous peoples, past and present. Participants stand on blankets that represent the land, and as key events are narrated, blankets are folded or removed and participants step away to symbolize land loss, displacement, and cultural disruption. Its purpose is to foster empathy, critical reflection, and awareness in support of truth and reconciliation.. Because it can bring up strong emotions, it should always be facilitated by trained leaders and teachers, with time for a debrief circle to process the experience respectfully.
